Putting Open Up Guides to Use: Climate Change Open Up Guide

This workshop will explore a draft version of the Open Up Guide for Climate Data now being developed under the Open Data Charter alongside the WRI and CODE in order to gather input and engage the open data community and climate change experts in developing this important resource for climate action.
Government agencies and NGOs need to collect, open, and use data of many kinds to address climate change effectively and enable stakeholders--including vulnerable communities--to prepare for climate risks and take advantage of resilience-building activities. To help meet this need, the Open Data Charter, World Resources Institute and the Center for Open Data Enterprise are developing an “Open Up Guide for Climate Data” with guidance on key national datasets. The Guide will include an accessible online repository of key use cases, data assets, and standards and key use cases, and is designed initially for use at the national level. Depending on a country’s particular needs, the data can be used for climate change mitigation, for adaptation, for reporting on climate progress, or for management of climate finance.
This workshop will engage participants in helping to refine the Guide and, in turn, will help them apply it to their own country’s circumstances and needs. The workshop will begin with a brief presentation on the Guide and then break into discussion groups based on different types of issues and applications (mitigation, resilience, etc.) The results will be improvements to the Guide, increased awareness of the application of open data for climate action, and potentially new data-driven strategies that participants can develop in addressing climate change in their own countries.
