Think Local - Better Data Through Community Engagement

One of the hottest topics on people’s minds is open data. Yet as the State of Open Data rightly questions, has this trend led to individuals, organizations, and governments actually opening data, and more importantly, using data to inform policy and better the community? Or is open data just that - a trend? How are communities and governments using open data? And what kinds of data are being opened? And what about data that isn’t collected by governments; how is that being created, collected, and shared among the community? And finally, is this data actually changing the lives of people in local communities?

These are the questions we seek to answer. Through an interactive panel presentation, we will discuss three different approaches to open data that have been sourced from throughout the TechSoup Global Network. Each project has a different methodology and way of opening or generating data, but all share the common thread of community involvement to make sure that open data is representative of all parts of a community to ensure transparency, completeness, and civic engagement.
