People’s Rights and Data: The Data Empowerment Debate

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

Along with the unprecedented increase in data accumulation comes the process of datafication – turning many aspects of people’s lives into digital data to create new value. This development comes at the expense of threats to privacy and personal data protection and the loss of control over people's own data, mainly to the benefit of powerful players such as governments and corporations. This session explores avenues by which this dangerous trend can be overturned or managed properly to ensure that people remain at the core of data initiatives. Building on the expertise and experiences of participants, the session will seek to understand what is required for data empowerment, not data extraction to become the norm in data initiatives, be it open, big, thick, citizen-generated or real-time data.
